Montana Partners in Flight and Bird Conservation Partnership
Montana PIF is a partnership of government and nongovernment agencies, organizations and individuals committed to the conservation of long- and short-distance migrant and resident landbirds and their habitats through inventory and monitoring, research, management and education efforts across the state of Montana. This group first met in 1990, and soon thereafter began to develop the first Montana Bird Conservation Plan. MTPIF has since expanded into the MT Bird Conservation Partnership (see below).
Montana PIF Bird Conservation Plan
As in other states, Montana PIF has prepared a Bird Conservation Plan to focus on restoring healthy ecosystems that will sustain productive and complete bird communities. By identifying priority species and habitats, and by providing a number of conservation objectives and strategies for each, we hope to empower agencies, landowners, conservation groups, and local decision makers to take the steps necessary to ensure a sound future for Montana's avifauna.

Montana Bird Conservation Partnership
The Montana Bird Conservation Partnership (MBCP) was created to bring together Montana PIF, the Joint Ventures, and people with an added interest in shorebirds and waterbirds. It includes experts from agencies, universities, and the private sector. MBCP seeks to coordinate the planning and implementation efforts in Montana for all four of the national Bird Conservation Initiatives.
This partnership grew out of the idea that as the Joint Ventures moved toward all-bird implementation planning, and Montana PIF began to work on implementation plans based on the Montana Bird Conservation Plan described above, all interested parties needed to work together.
We now have our own MBCP WEB PAGE that we keep updated with news and events. Here you can also join our listserve. Bookmark this page and send items to be posted to Amy Cilimburg.
MBCP GUIDING PRINCIPLES:
• Provide information to collaborating partners for consideration in land management decisions.
• Keep common birds and their habitats common so that they do not become endangered, threatened, or rare.
• Conserve, protect, and restore endangered, threatened, and rare bird species and their habitats so their populations are again secure.
• Recognize the social and economic value of birds to the people of Montana.
• Identify opportunities to conserve birds and their habitats within Montana using the best available science.

Partners in Flight

Partners in Flight (PIF) is a voluntary, international coalition of government agencies, conservation groups, academic institutions, private businesses, and citizens dedicated to "keeping common birds common" and reversing the downward trends of declining species. PIF's primary goal is to direct resources to the conservation of all birds and their habitats through cooperative efforts in the areas of monitoring, research, management, education, and international cooperation.
