Conservation Issues

At the Avian Science Center we are particularly interested in increasing public awareness of the following bird conservation issues:Llazuli Bunting, R. L. Hutto photo

Cats and Birds

Climate Change and Birds

Energy Development and Birds
Shade-grown Coffee and Birds

We are also interested in the broad issue of declines in bird species in this region.  In Jne 2007 the National Audubon Society released a report entitled COMMON BIRDS IN DECLINE which details their assessment ofthe status of he birds we know and love.  See Audubon's website for this report.

No one likes to have birds crash into windows - it is a significant mortality issue.  New York Audubon has produced the in-depth Bird Safe Building Guidelines which are worth following!

The Avian Science Center is also contributing to bird conservation efforts through coordinating and conducting research and monitoring in order to answer two main questions:

1) Are any bird species or populations in decline in this region?
2) What are the causes of any observed declines?

We are studying several management activities that may affect bird populations:

• Fire management
• Change in forest thinning practices
• Grazing regimes
• Wetland degradation and loss

As this site develops, we will update information regarding these and other conservation issues.
