ASC FIRE ECOLOGY RESOURCES Big Sky High School students in the field

K-12 Education - Students Investigating Burns

The following are fire ecology resources developed by the Avian Science Center at the University of Montana.  We developed these resouces in collaboration with the Montana Natural History Center and with support from the Bullitt Foundation.  Download and use for educational purposes only.

Please contact Amy Cilimburg for questions, clarifications, or feedback.

Please click below to download our new Field Guide. Our guide highlights identification tools and forest fire effects on forbs, shrubs, trees, and weeds found in Montana's Rocky Mountain Region.

Science Teacher Institute - DERS

The following are materials presented at the March 19, 2006 Institute:

Teaching Kids About Birds.  This 2 page handout provides many useful web links and includes information about how to access resources from the MT Natural History Center.

Bird Topography.  This handout has 2 diagrams of the parts of the birds.  One includes the names and one is blank (to use as a quiz).

Teaching BirdID.  This is Kristina's pwerepoint, and it includes bird songs and calls.  You will need to "unzip" this folder and extract the slide show and accompanying files (13 MB).  Click here to download a freeware zip utility.

Below are materials presented at the Summer 2005 Institute:

SIB Curriculum Goals, D. Hutto This document describes how the study of fire ecology can be used to teach the process of scientific inquiry (42 KB).

Field Demonstration Handout provided by D. Hutto (7.5 MB)

Severe Fire - Agent of Restoration.  This is D. Hutto's general power point presentation about the ecological effects of fire (42 MB).

Carrying Behavior in Humans.  This is the 1976 SCIENCE article describing differences in book carrying between males and females.  This can provide a good introduction to the process of science and is a test repeatable with your students.  (Jenni and Jenni; .pdf; 218 KB).

Saguaro Cactus Story.  Provided by D. Hutto (30 MB).  This power point provides an example of how to develop good scientific questions.
