Avian Science Center faculty and taff instruct the following University of Montana courses:

Ornithology (BIO 304)
2004 – Team taught by ASC’s Director Dr. Hutto and Dr. Rob Fletcher
2005 – Taught exclusively by ASC’s Dr. Rob Fletcher
An upper-level undergraduate course on the broad topic of Ornithology is offered each year within the Division of Biological Sciences. This course consists of lectures, labs, field trips, and an urban field project. We cover a broad range of topics, including the evolution of flight, patterns of migration, mating systems, life-history strategies, species interactions, biogeography, and conservation issues.

Field Methods in Avian Biology (BIO 495)
Taught by ASC’s Director Dr. Hutto and ASC staff
An upper-level undergraduate field course on techniques for Avian Ecology is offered each spring within the Division of Biological Sciences. In this intensive, week-long course, we introduce students to a variety of field techniques, including point count surveys, mist-netting birds, nest searching, and using Geographical Information Systems for avian research.

Avian Habitat Selection (BIO 510)
Taught by ASC’s Director Dr. Hutto
A graduate-level course on avian habitat selection is generally offered on a bi-annual basis within the Division of Biological Sciences. In this course students discuss terminology associated with studying avian habitat selection, methods that scientists use to investigate habitat selection, theoretical issues and advances, proximate cues used by birds, and issues of spatial scale. Where appropriate, students incorporate data collected by the Landbird Monitoring Program to help elucidate methods, analysis techniques, and other issues related to the study of avian habitat selection.

Fire Ecology (BIO 519)
Taught by ASC’s Director Dr. Hutto
A graduate-level course on issues in fire ecology is generally offered on a bi-annual basis within the Division of Biological Sciences. For the fall 2004 syllabus see: http://biology.dbs.umt.edu/biol519/syllabus.htm
