Russian Olive Removal
The idea
Russian Olive is considered to be an invasive shrub in Montana and other states in the West. Russian Olive is a very hardy tree that, when established, can outcompete native cottonwood, ash, and willow seedlings and prevent their growth. The Bureau of Land Management has initiated a Russian Olive removal project on the Missouri River in central Montana, and has asked the Avian Science Center to monitor the effects of this tree removal on riparian-dependent bird species. We hope to use changes in bird communities over time to help us better understand the effects of these restoration efforts. This project was initiated in 2008 and is ongoing.
