RAW DATA DOWNLOADS:

Data in the table below are from the permanent, long-term monitoring transects (surveyed 1994 through 2004). Note that both active and inactive transects are included. We started the monitoring program in 1994 with about twice as many transects and many were discontinued after 1996. These are differentiated by the variable "active" in the data files.
There are three different files available for every National Forest or partner. One contains all of the bird data and the other two have the point locations for use in either GIS or Google Earth. All are zipped because that is necessary for the web download process. (Double-click on the zipped folder should automatically bring up an "Unzip" program. If not, download one here.)
More information on the files is below the table.

Bird data files
Explanations of the variables and data codes can be downloaded here
The files contain all bird data, as entered from field data forms. There is one line (record) per bird observation. There are multiple observations per survey, of course, and may even be multiple records for a single species at one survey. This table gives all birds seen, with no filtering. All surveys are included regardless of acceptable protocol limits (bad weather, noise, time, etc.). This is for making species lists and distributions, not for quantitative analyses.
Shape Files
Unzip these files to obtain a folder that has all of the necessary components for a GIS shapefile. Note that both active and inactive transects are included. If you want the active and inactive transects in separate files, download these files:
All transects active as of 2004 (All Forests)
All transects discontinued before 2004 (All Forests)
Google Earth files
Google Earth provides an easy way to visualize our survey locations on top of aerial photo imagery. In Montana, Google Earth is currently using the same 2005 NAIP imagery that we use in all of our GIS mapping. You can download Google Earth here.
Unzip and click on one of the .kml files and Google Earth will automatically launch. You can open the files this way every time or you can save them in your Google Earth "Places" directory.
The labels that show up are the Point ID numbers. If you click on a point the transect number will also be displayed. These can be looked up in the bird files to find the bird list for that point (or transect) in each year it was surveyed.
