2008 Citizen Monitoring - see below.

OVERVIEW

As part of the Landbird Monitoring Program, in 2005 the ASC initiated a Region-wide survey for Flammulated Owls in Montana and North Idaho.  Prior to this field season, Flammulated Owls had not been adequately surveyed across Forest Service lands in this Region.
Flammulated Owl

We developed a monitoring protocol, selected sites via GIS modeling, and surveyed for owls on 12 Forests.  We found Flams on all except the Lewis and Clark, Gallatin, and Custer National Forests.  The Nez Perce NF had the highest detections, followed by the Lolo, Helena, & Bitterroot Forests.

You can download the Final Report, our recommended protocol, see a map of our findings, or simply check out the Results Summary Table.

You can also link to our new Google Earth mapping service where you can zoom in to known Flammulated Owl detections.

In 2007 we began a citizen monitoring project to continue these surveys in the greater Missoula and Bitterroot areas.  In 2008 we will continue or project in and around Missoula and add the Helena area.  SEE BELOW.

2008 Citizen Monitoring

With support from MT Fish Wildlife and Parks, during the summer of 2007 we piloted a citizen science monitoring effort for Flammulated Owls in the Greater Missoula Area and Bitterroot Valley.  During the summer of 2008 we plan to repeat this in and around Missoula and add the Helena area.  We need your help!

As volunteers, you will "adopt" a survey route which you complete twice sometime between the 3rd week of May and 13 July.  You will work in pairs and can hike or drive to survey your route. You’ll stop at established points and play an owl caller. Plan to be out from 10 pm until ~ 1or 2 am.  The ASC will provide training, equipment, and protocols.  If you are interested in being a “night owl” a couple nights this summer and would like to hear or maybe even catch a glimpse of a Flam, please contact Amy Cilimburg

By participating in this citizen science project you will be helping to document the long-term status of these owls, assist with our understanding of their habitat needs and, hopefully, enjoy collecting valuable data.

Data:

The raw data are available from the table below, for download as excel files.  These first 2 files contain data for the entire Region.  The remaining files are the data split out by individual forests.  Note: variables are explained on a separate worksheet within the files.  Use the POINT_ID to tie the owl with the spatial and vegetation data.

NOTE:  Within these files, the presence of a Flammulated Owl is indicated with Y = yes or N = no.  These are not however, to be interpreted as abundance.  A number of times, the same owl was detected at greater than one point.

GIS Shape File of all data - you will need to unzip this file to obtain all the associated files.  (Download a free zip/unzip program HERE).  From this shape file, you can select the forest of interest using the Forest Number in Results Summary table below). Metadata are included.
